Drawing the human figure.
Figure drawing can be done very simply, as in gesture drawing -The small sketch-, or in greater detail, using charcoal, pencil or your fingers to smudge the charcoal. Artists take a variety of methods to drawing the human figure. They may draw from live models, from photographs or from memory and imagination. Drawing from imagination is often exalted for the expressiveness it encourages, and criticized for the inaccuracies introduced by the artist's lack of knowledge or limited memory in visualizing the human figure; the experience of the artist with other methods has a large influence on the effectiveness of this technique.

An easy way to create shading is to look for the shapes that the shadows and highlights create, and then draw these shapes as toned areas on your illustration. Apply charcoal and then smudge it with wipe or a piece of paper (I use my finger to smudge the charcoal on my illustration)

Start with a ball and then mark the proportions of the eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid straight lines, use curve ones. Practice each part (eyes, nose, mouth) separately. After you practice them, draw the entire head and face. Use photos as references.

Draw and copy pictures, nature, your dog, your face on the mirror, your sister, your friends, the bread in your table, your car, fruits, copy, copy, copy. That is one of the best ways to learn how to draw proportions, perspective and values. Copy and then put your own part in the illustration. On this sketch, I copy the face, not exactly as the picture, and I added my own ornaments.
